White spruce, along with balsam fir (Abies balsamea), form vast, spruce-fir forests in the northern coniferous region. Their evergreen spires epitomize the northland. White spruce does best if the soil is acidic and if the rooting area is cool or shaded. Superior in every way to the non-native blue spruce.
